As action, as allegory, as cinema, The Hunger Games is the best American science-fiction film since The Matrix, and if Ross and his crew stay with the series for the next two books, we may get that rarest of things: a blockbuster franchise that earns our money through craft, emotion and execution, not merely marketing and effects.

The Hunger Games” is a triumph for all involved, proof that Lionsgate can play the blockbuster game, proof that Gary Ross can find the human heart of even the biggest film, and proof that Jennifer Lawrence is more than just Sundance hype. When it opens next week, “The Hunger Games” is likely to be a major hit, and in this case, it deserves to be.
Too often when it comes to big screen adaptations of beloved best-selling novels, we spend the bulk of a review pointing out all of the places the filmmaker went wrong. With The Hunger Games, it’s a distinct pleasure to sing about all of the places the masterful translation went right.

Day 23: Your favorite secondary character: Pollux. Is that weird? Probably. I like him, not only because he is such a kind hearted character with an unfortunate past but also because of the Roman mythology of twin brothers Castor and Pollux.

Day 22: Your favorite book of the three: The one that started it all - The Hunger Games

With a compelling story that actually has something to say for itself, and performances that sell everything perfectly, Lawrence and co could have been wearing black leotards in front of a grey background, and the movie still would have worked. The Hunger Games is a bold, intelligent and entertaining movie, and a brilliant adaptation of the book. If only all action films could be this good.
A faithful adap, a grown-up teen movie and flaming good entertainment. The big test for the franchise lies ahead with the uneven second and third books. But on this showing, the odds are in its favour.
